By combining photography (an art form where one must be physically present) with painting (an art form that does not require physical presence), I am illustrating the desire for exploration within the traditional limitations of domesticity - a limitation traditionally assigned to women.
Historically, as a woman has been physically tied to the domestic, she must explore and express herself in more limited forms, but the desire for exploration remains. Throughout history, two of these socially acceptable forms have been painting and writing. Underscoring the socially acceptable, my work's treatment and subject matter remain decidedly romantic and symbolically feminine while the titles, lifted from mythology, love songs, and historic feminist literature, question the condition of a woman’s independence and represent the ever-present desire.
